Ekaette (aka Ekaete)

Starring:
Eucharia Anunobi – Mrs Uzomma
Desmond Elliot – Tony
Carolcee Ejemurua – Ekaete
Ini Ikpi – Ekaete's mum
Oto Tom – Mma (Ekaete's friend)

Basically
Ekaette, an 18 year old ambitious village girl from Akwa Ibom with poor educational background, dreams of going to Lagos one day to find a job in order to provide for her family. Her dream appears to come true when a family friend, Mrs. Uzomma, visits her village and promises to set her up in business on the condition that she works for her as a house girl for a year. Being an ambitious and optimistic girl, Ekaette is over the moon at the offer and accepts to go to Lagos, little does she know what "the city that never sleeps" beholds for her.

!!!Spoilers ahead!!!

Some of the lessons from the movie include:
  • preaching the gospel and wearing the yoke of Christianity does not actually mean that you are a christian. Ekaette's parent's entrusted her to Mrs. Uzomma because they believed her to be a good christian who would take good care of their daughter and not go back on her promises - story story
  • It truly sheds light on the plight of some domestic aids in Nigeria (and most likely other parts of the world) - Ekaette trusted her madam that she told her the oga (Tony) has been trying to rape her (he finally succeeded). But guess what? Madam Uzomma simply tells her that she is a smelly girl and Tony would not want anything to do with her. And  nope she doesn't just stop there, she goes ahead to add ... besides even if he does, she (Ekaette) should be old enough to handle it! Like seriously? we are talking rape here! What a wicked woman.
  • Pride cometh before a fall: Despite the maltreatment Ekaette was receiving she was too proud to go back home. This made me really sad because I know that in a way her pride can be seen as "strength" in that she did not want to go back as a "failure" with little to offer her parents. So I could see why she wanted to stick it out -- however, if I was in her shoes, I would have packed my load and returned to the safety of my family.
Recommended?

I highly recommend this movie because of the numerous lessons it teaches. It's an old movie though, so the quality is not that awesome; but if you can get past that it's an awesome movie to watch and it's not that long either.

What I loved most about this movie was the fact that when Ekaette finally decides to go back home to Akwa Ibom, little did she know that Akwa Ibom was where her "greener pastures" lay. The ending of this movie was truly beautiful.
